Covid-19 and the impact it has had on our fundraising events meant that the Nearer to Home build had been temporarily suspended. However we can now announce that building work will commence in June with the project to be completed in late 2021/early 2022 and our fundraising will continue with this aim. Help us build a new cancer support centre in Norwich

Our vision to bring greater cancer care nearer to home.

At Big C, we see first hand the impact cancer has on individuals, families, friends and communities across Norfolk & Waveney. Since 1980 we have been dedicated to the fight again cancer and today, we help thousands of people across our county and beyond.

We are the only organisation offering specialised, community-based cancer support centres in Norfolk, with centres at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), in Kings Lynn, Great Yarmouth and Gorleston.

Living with cancer can have a devastating effect on mental and physical health, and can impact on relationships, finances, workplace, and family life.

Every year more than 8,000 people in Norfolk & Waveney will be told that they have cancer and many more are living with the effects every day.

22,319 visits were made to our centres in 2019
and the number of visits will continue to increase.

Added to this now, delays to cancer diagnoses and treatment due to the Covid 19 pandemic have been well documented and national health strategies make clear the urgent need for increased community-based support.

These are the reasons why we launched our ‘Nearer to Home’ appeal.

We are building a new Cancer Support & Information Centre in the centre of Norwich.

Help us create a space that will change lives.

Working with Norwich based architects, Purcell, we are repurposing an existing building on Dereham Road in Norwich.

We will provide a building with …

  • a light, calming central seating area
  • private rooms for one-to-one counselling
  • a bright space for group activities
  • and a sensory well-being garden

 

Once launched, the centre will provide services for emotional support including:

  • counselling, support groups, time with our registered nurses, complementary therapies,
  • bereavement and palliative care support
  • practical support such as welfare rights advice or headwear options
  • individually tailored health and fitness programmes
  • a cancer information library

 

All Big C services are accessible for patients, carers, family, friends and free of charge.

We need your support.

To make this vision a reality, we need you. Every pound donated to the appeal will go directly to the development of this vital new Centre to support local people in the heart of the Norwich community.

With your help we have already raised £730,000 for the building work to commence. The builders are now on site: Building work begins at Dereham Road

But we need to continue fundraising …
To complete the build and for the fixtures and fittings and all the finishing touches, so that the Centre can open early in 2022 and welcome people through the doors.

Will this replace your existing Norwich Centre?

No, our existing Norwich centre in the grounds of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital will still be there.

We know that it is not always easy for people to visit our centre at the hospital, or they do not wish to return to the hospital once they have finished treatment.

This is why the new Norwich Centre will work alongside our existing Centre, to ensure that everyone affected by cancer in Norwich and the surrounding area has access to the best care and support, close to the community, where and when they need us most.
